Rapid transformation of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods has put economic pressure on former industrial sites and manufacturing facilities that still play a critical role in the City's economy. In North Brooklyn, the particular tension between heavy industry, new residential-commercial development, and everyday neighborhood life presents a case study for addressing the challenges of urban industrial districts across the country.
I led a multidisciplinary team to define policy, design and infrastructure strategies to protect the essential industrial jobs and services in North Brooklyn, while also welcoming the integration of new innovative industries, light industrial uses, and advanced manufacturing sectors. I also led an in-depth community engagement process to establish neighborhood development goals and build consensus around future land uses in North Brooklyn as part of the BOA process.
The result was a novel framework for mixed-use industrial-commercial development including new building typologies, land use strategies, and funding mechanisms that can apply to similar districts nationwide.
